Welcome to the DeWitt Carter Public School Website. We hope this website will further strengthen the connection between school, home, and our community. DeWitt Carter Public School is located on Fares Street in Port Colborne. We are the only public school located on the East Side of the Welland Canal. DeWitt Carter is currently home to close to 230 students from junior kindergarten to Grade eight. Kindergarten Open House at DeWitt Carter

Folks, is your child starting Kindergarten in September of 2018? If so, on Thursday, February 1st you can come by the school and register your child for Kindergarten. Come any time between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm with your child. We will have some special activities for the children to enjoy and you can tour the classrooms. It is a great opportunity to meet the Kindergarten teaching team and ask any questions about the program. We have a special goodie bag with some engaging learning resources for your child to take with them. Please bring your child's birth certificate and immunization record with you to complete the registration. If you have any questions, please call us at the school. If one of your friends or neighbours has a Kindergarten aged child, please pass this information on to them so they can register.

Battery Challenge

We are willing to bet that you have several dead batteries laying around the house now that the holidays are over. If you can, zip them up in a baggie and send them in with your child. They will be eager to use them to contribute to the classroom battery challenge.

Old toys and electronics themselves can be donated to a charity if they are in decent condition. If not, the electronics can always be recycled at a municipal electronic waste event. In advance, thanks for doing your part!

Electronic Recycling

The Intermediate classes will be holding a fundraising day in April where the community can bring all old electronics to be recycled. All proceeds will go to offset the cost of their year end trip to Camp Wahanowin.

Please save all old electronics such as TV's, VCRs, DVD players, stereos, computers, monitors, cell phones, etc.

Any items that contain personal information will be wiped to ensure your privacy. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. McBride at:

DRAGON FOCUS

We are always working at improving our instructioanl and intervention strategies in literacy and numeracy. We are committed to:

LITERACY

We have made great gains in literacy but will strive to maintain them by committing to a comprehensive literacy block that focuses on using assessment data to work with students in small groups in reading and writing.

MATHEMATICS

Mathematics will be our narrow focus this year. Staff have committed to deepening their understanding of more intentional mathematics planning and using better questions. This is a strategy that helps our students access their learning of the curriculum more effectively. This learning will unfold over all strands of mathematics.

STAFF GROWTH GOAL
Staff will commit to increase their knowledge of technology and how it is used in the classroom as we move towards teaching by how students learn in the 21st century

WE WILL:
- Co-create success criteria, rubrics and exemplars with students, and use these regularly as we provide ongoing descriptive feedback that is clear, specific and meaningful to improve student learning and achievement.

- Provide students with multiple opportunities to improve their work and provide modeling on how to identify next steps and set learning goals

- Plan instruction for students based on their learning needs and use the gradual release of responsibility model to build independence, perseverance and responsibility.

- Create an environment that promotes thinking through posing and responding to a wide variety of questions and teaching through critical thinking, inquiry and problem solving.

Finally, we will focus on having students receive ongoing, descriptive feedback based on the success criteria from the teacher and from peers and inquiry-based professional learning that builds capacity, informs instructional practice and contributes to a culture of learning.
